A structure for plumbing callouts and jobs — a separate callout fee for diagnosis, so the customer doesn't assume the assessment itself is free.

Why this structure
A callout fee that's separate from the hourly labour rate is standard practice — it recognises that diagnosis is real work, even on jobs where the customer ultimately doesn't proceed.
Commonly forgotten
- • Emergency or out-of-hours surcharge
- • Premium for parts sourced same-day rather than pre-ordered
- • Waste disposal of old fittings
Good optional extras
- • Annual boiler service
- • Extended parts warranty
- • Priority callout membership
Terms to get right
State clearly whether the callout fee is deducted from the final bill if the customer goes ahead with the work.
FAQ
Should the callout fee be waived if the customer proceeds?
Deducting it from the final invoice (rather than waiving it outright) is a common middle ground — the assessment was still real work either way.
How should I quote parts I haven't seen yet?
"Priced on inspection" is more honest than guessing — just make sure the customer knows the labour estimate stands regardless of what the parts end up costing.
